There seems to be a growing trend in having chair mats these days. When I worked in an office no one ever used them. The carpets we had were designed to work well with operators chairs and so there was no need for them. I suppose that was a long time ago and health and safety rules may have changed and meant that more people have to have a chair mat. I know that some people had foot rests and some people arm rests and anyone who wanted one could have one. I think this was an ergonomic feature and they wanted to make sure that they offered everyone these facilities so they had no come back if they suffered as a result of not having them. I suppose they may now use chair mats for the same reason, as if someone skidded in their chair and fell out of it then they may sue the company and so with the safety of a mat there is not this risk.
